Strategy 1 – Implement identified value stream mapping projects
1.1 Increase value to first and second thinning (T1 & T2) of pine plantation harvests 1.2 Value add to small diameter logs 1.3 Increase residue recovery and markets 1.4 Undertake an analysis of the recently delivered ‘Harvest and Haulage Value Stream Mapping report 1.5 Trial regular ‘wood flow’ meetings Strategy 2 - Develop Advanced Manufacturing Hubs that will assist in optimizing the value of every tree harvested. 2.1 Appoint a consultant to undertake a detailed assessment on the requirements of a Collie based Advanced Manufacturing Hub as a trial site for future sites The consultant will submit a report and deliver a briefing to the project steering group. 2.2 Make available to industry the information collected to allow them to develop an ‘Industry Led Proposal’ funding submission to State Government |
1.1 & 1.2 Research has been undertaken by Wespine to review equipment options to allow for greater processing of T1 & T2 small diameter logs.
1.3 SW Timber hub developed a consultant’s brief to undertake Adaptive Residue Harvesting trials. USC were the successful consultants. And were appointed on 29/07/2020. Negotiations are currently underway with FPC to identify a suitable coup to undertake the trials. It is anticipated that these trials will be completed in October 2020 1.4 A review of the harvest and haulage value stream mapping noted the key areas of improvement is in relation to Safety. 1.5 The hub facilitates monthly (weekly during the height of the COVID 19 impacts) between FPC and key softwood customers. 2.1 A consultants brief was developed and Synergies Economic Consulting were the successful contractors. They were appointed on 16/12/2019. They delivered a prefeasibility study on the advanced manufacturing hub (see attachments 4, 5 & 6) This report has been used by industry to apply to WA Stage Government for funding under the ‘Collie Futures Industry Development Fund. The proponents have been successful in the first stage of the two stage application process and are currently developing their stage 2 application |

A ‘forest Industry Safety and Training Cooperative’ has been formed to work with the industry to improve safety and skills.
The steering committee for this group consists of representatives from all sectors and regions.
A training needs survey was undertaken in June 2020 to assist the industry to develop a cost effective and efficient training process and package. The survey results have been collated (appendix 8) and discussions regarding skill development are underway with training providers. |
